Here it is! My wee collection of the best tracks I’ve heard in the last 30 days includes Press On Randy (Seamus Tomkins, featured image above), a one-man band from Bend, Oregon who delivers a refreshing sound skilfully blended with introspective and thought-provoking lyrics. We’ve selected his song “Timmy in the Well.”

Tomkins openly admits that his new album Ghost with a Fish Eye Lens is a refection of his recent struggle with clinical depression.

“Although I am normally a rather private person, I did feel compelled to open up about my depression for a few reasons. One, because it was a driving force behind this latest musical endeavor. The second is because one of the things that helped me along during my dark days was hearing of other people’s stories and battles with mental illness,” says Seamus. “It certainly made me realize I wasn’t alone in my struggles and that a hell of a lot of people deal with throughout their lives. Needless to say, this is the most deeply personal musical project I have ever done…”

Phil Leavitt and Joie Calio form the Los Angeles-based two-man band 7Horse. You’ve already heard some of their earlier work when their single “Meth Lab Zoso Sticker” was featured in the trailer for The Wolf of Wall Street, as well used as soundtrack in the film itself.

“There’s a certain level of validation when Martin Scorsese thinks your song is good enough for his movie,” Calio says. “That was the proverbial shot in the arm. We weren’t looking for it, but we had done everything right. We’d worked our asses off. And sometimes stuff like that comes to you.”

Today we’re featuring their song “Flying High with No I.D.” — best described as blues-rock-cosmic country.

Giving back the time, stilling my desire
She knows it’s mad, the snow’s come back
The rose un-burned, the page un-turned

Dust your conscience off, you’d better stop
This stubborn mind don’t feel too kind
I’ll find out why it’s in her eyes…
Leaving it to roll

There’s a lullaby, saving us a riot
Giving back the time, stilling my desire
She knows it’s mad, the snow’s come back
The rose un-burned, the sense of her
