I’m happy to kick off this month’s playlist with a track from Scotland’s own Broken by Rock. When I heard Brittle on a random Reddit post last November, I loved it — but I forgot to bookmark it. I was unable to find the post , so again, so I began hunting down the song’s creator based on just a few clues. It took me a few weeks, but it was worth the time.
Brittle is a funky, harmonious sound that will take you on a wholly unique venture. It was produced by Alan Clarke, a talented musician and producer who writes, plays and records all of his music from his home in Glasgow.
“I’m very much a DIY amateur noise maker. I’ve been involved in a few bands around Glasgow, most recently East Coast Defector which gigged in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Fife and who enjoyed the festival life with a summer slot at Doune The Rabbit Hole. East Coast Defector were all about pop, fuzz pedals and lots of noise and I was keen to branch out and do something a bit more electronic. There’s a definite ’80s vibe running through some of the new material which I am unashamed about,” says Clarke.
The first Broken By Rock gig supported Universal Thee at Nice N’ Sleazies on Friday 11th December. Clarke has plans to release more tracks in the near future. You can follow him at @alantheclarke on Twitter or here on Soundcloud.
