Argyll and Bute Support Drives Business Growth, Jobs

Argyll and Bute support drives business growth and new jobs

Argyll and Bute Council’s Business Gateway service supported more than 450 businesses last year, helping new start-ups launch, existing firms expand, and creating hundreds of jobs across the region.

In 2023, the team assisted 152 start-up businesses, generating 173 new jobs and projecting a combined turnover of £6.06 million. Alongside this, 301 established businesses received tailored advice, with more than 550 owners taking part in training webinars and 165 one-to-one sessions covering topics such as marketing, finance and digital skills.

Between June 2023 and March 2025, the service also delivered a programme worth £516,521 through the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund. A total of 165 local businesses benefited from grants, training, accreditation and expert support.

Follow-up checks show significant impact: 46 businesses reported a 45 percent increase in turnover, rising from £10.7 million to £15.5 million, while employee numbers grew from 96 to 129. Across all firms approved for support, turnover is forecast to rise by nearly one-third to £32.8 million within a year, with full-time jobs expected to increase by 47 percent to 468.

Council figures praised the programme’s effect on the local economy. “Our Business Gateway team is an incredible source of support for businesses in Argyll and Bute,” said Councillor Math Campbell-Sturgess, the council’s policy lead for business. “From existing businesses looking to expand to new start-ups, the range of help and advice available from the team is invaluable.”

Business owners also highlighted the benefits. Rhona Wheatley, of Isle of Bute Distillery, said the team had provided guidance since the company launched in 2018. “Having that guidance available locally has been invaluable,” she said. “The team feels like old friends who are always available to point us in the right direction.”

According to the council, 97 percent of clients recommend the service, reflecting its role in supporting growth across the region.
