Falkirk Council Approves New Gaelic Language Plan

Falkirk Council has signed off its third Gaelic Language Plan, setting out measures to support the language and culture locally over the next five years. The plan, which runs from 2025 to 2030, will now go to Bòrd na Gàidhlig for review.

Developed under the Gaelic Language (Scotland) Act 2005, the strategy focuses on three national priorities: increasing the use of Gaelic, expanding opportunities to learn it, and promoting a positive image of the language.

Although Gaelic speakers remain a small part of Falkirk’s population, the 2022 Census recorded a rise in local residents with some Gaelic skills, from 0.3% in 2011 to 1.6%—around 2,450 people.

Key actions in the plan include:
– Expanding Gaelic learning in schools and communities.
-Supporting Gaelic Medium Education (GME) and exploring options for a local GME school.
– Increasing visibility of Gaelic in signage and council communications.
– Providing staff with Gaelic awareness training.
– Working with local and national Gaelic organisations.

The plan was shaped by a four-week public consultation earlier this year. Of 58 responses, 76% said it supported the development of Gaelic locally, though views were mixed, with some respondents questioning costs and relevance.

Council leader Cecil Meiklejohn said the measures struck a balance between national obligations and local realities:

“While our Gaelic-speaking population remains small, there is growing interest in learning and cultural engagement. This plan ensures we continue to offer support where it is needed, and in a way that is proportionate, sustainable and inclusive.”

Delivery will be managed within existing resources, with applications for national Gaelic grants made where additional funding is required. A cross-service implementation group will oversee progress.

If approved by Bòrd na Gàidhlig, the plan will guide Falkirk Council’s Gaelic commitments until 2030.
