Event returns to the city for the first time since 2018, showcasing infrastructure progress and plans for a cycle-friendly future

Scotland’s national cycling charity, Cycling Scotland, will bring its flagship annual conference to Dundee on September 10, highlighting the city’s growing reputation as a hub for active travel.

The event, which last came to Dundee in 2018, will bring together transport leaders, local authorities, and campaigners from across the country to share progress and ideas on making everyday cycling more accessible.

Key speakers include Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop, Dundee City Council leader Mark Flynn, and Councillor Steven Rome, convener for Fair Work, Economic Growth and Infrastructure.

Cllr Rome welcomed the conference, pointing to recent infrastructure developments such as secure bike storage, the Broughty Ferry to Monifieth Active Travel Corridor, and the Bell Street Green Transport Hub. “We’ve made significant progress, but there’s still work to be done,” he said. “The majority of people in Dundee support measures like more segregated cycle paths and 20-minute neighbourhoods. This conference gives us the chance to show our achievements to a national audience.”

Cycling Scotland praised the city’s active travel initiatives, including the rollout of on-street cycle storage in residential areas and citywide delivery of Bikeability training in all primary schools. “Dundee is making real strides,” said Denise Hamilton, the charity’s Head of Communications. “The conference will spotlight the city’s efforts to build a connected cycling network and give more people the opportunity to choose cycling for everyday trips.”

Local campaigners also see the event as a turning point. Catherine Wykes, Chair of Dundee Cycling Forum, called the decision to host the conference in the city a “vote of confidence.” She added, “We’ve got a way to go, but this shows real momentum. With experts gathering here, it’s the perfect moment to reflect on progress and push for further change.”

More information about the conference can be found on the Cycling Scotland website.
