Dumfries and Galloway Council launches major ecological assessment to safeguard wildlife during construction

Dumfries and Galloway Council has begun a series of environmental surveys along the River Nith as part of preparations for a forthcoming flood protection scheme. The non-intrusive surveys, which started in April and will continue through September 2025, aim to gather critical data on local wildlife and habitats before any construction begins.

Working alongside experts from Jacobs, the Nith Catchment Fishery Trust, and the Nith District Salmon Fishery Board, the council will assess a wide range of environmental factors to ensure sensitive species are protected and disruption kept to a minimum.

The surveys include:

  • Bat monitoring, using specialised equipment to track activity around trees and buildings—some inspections may involve ladders or ropes.

  • Kingfisher nesting checks, to protect this legally safeguarded species under the Wildlife and Countryside Act.

  • Invasive species identification, aimed at locating and planning the removal of harmful non-native plants and animals.

  • Fish and river ecology studies, observing key species such as otters, freshwater pearl mussels, water voles, salmon, and lamprey.

  • Noise assessments, to measure and manage sound levels during future construction phases.

“Protecting the natural environment is a key part of our planning,” a council spokesperson said. “These surveys ensure we can deliver the flood protection scheme while safeguarding the species that call the River Nith home.”

While most surveys will take place on public land, access to private gardens or greenspace may be required. In such cases, the council will contact affected residents or businesses in advance. All surveyors will carry identification and official documentation.
