Inverurie Service Point to Close as Council Shifts to Digital Services

Residents in Inverurie are being urged to prepare for a significant change in how they access local authority services, as Aberdeenshire Council confirms the permanent closure of its part time Service Point on 2 April, at 5pm.

The facility, currently housed within Inverurie Library, was only relocated there in May last year following the closure of Gordon House. However, the council says evolving public habits have rendered the physical service increasingly redundant. A marked decline in in person visits, coupled with growing reliance on online platforms and telephone support, has driven the decision.

Officials have framed the move not as a withdrawal of service, but as a recalibration. Council services will remain fully accessible through digital channels, webchat, and telephone lines, with in person appointments still available when necessary. Staff have already begun guiding regular users through the transition, ensuring they understand how to navigate the updated system.

For routine matters such as payments, residents will still have several options. Transactions can be completed online or by phone, and locally through Post Offices and PayPoint outlets. While community hubs such as Live Life Aberdeenshire leisure centres will offer guidance on accessing services, they will not handle payments directly.

The council has also made clear that those unable to resolve issues remotely will not be left stranded. Appointments with relevant service teams can still be arranged, preserving a degree of face to face interaction where it is genuinely required.

Importantly, the closure does not signal a broader retreat from physical service points across the region. Facilities in Fraserburgh and Peterhead will remain operational.

For many councils across the United Kingdom, this shift reflects a broader administrative trend. Digital first governance is no longer an aspiration but an expectation. Inverurie’s Service Point, it seems, is simply the latest casualty of that quiet but decisive transformation.
