Emergency services have agreed a phased reduction of part of the exclusion zone surrounding the Cairngorms wildfire, subject to a series of safety measures and operational mitigations being fully implemented. As the multi-agency response enters its third week, a strict exclusion zone has remained in place to protect public safety while firefighting operations continue. Although significant progress has been made in tackling the wildfire, substantial risks remain, including ongoing firefighting activity, helicopter operations, heavy machinery movements, tree felling, unstable ground, deep-seated hotspots within peatland and the continued potential for reignition.

The multi-agency partnership has been working hard behind the scenes to introduce a phased reopening of the incident cordon, with a view to allowing the Refuel event, planned for 5 August – 9 August at Badaguish to go ahead as planned. While it was hoped that the cordon at Coylumbridge could be amended today, a dynamic risk assessment of the cordon and forest area has identified that more measures must be taken to protect the public amidst this ongoing and complex incident. This includes how traffic and footfall is managed around the high-risk area beyond Badaguish, which includes the Glenmore forest and Loch Morlich, which will remain closed to the public. Active firefighting, heavy machinery movement and dangerous trees are still a serious public safety risk in this area.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) is carrying out daily thermal imaging drone activity to identify hot spots in the Glenmore area affected by the Cairngorms wildfire. This work will continue in areas of difficult terrain for the foreseeable future as work continues to dampen down deep-seated fires. The drones are being flown twice a day, with equipment provided by Forestry and Land Scotland and further support from partners at the Cairngorms National Park.In addition, SFRS currently has four fire appliances on site, with around 20 firefighters working alongside partners and helicopter support.Planning is underway to potentially reopen the Glenmore area during Friday, 7 August, subject to the continued firefighting efforts. This decision follows a multi-agency assessment of the area and the ongoing firefighting efforts that started more than 3 weeks ago since the incident began on the 15 July. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS), in conjunction with the Scottish Wildfire Forum (SWF), is issuing a warning for a very high risk of wildfire across Eastern Highlands, Eastern and Southern Scotland from today (Wednesday, 12 August) until Thursday, 13 August. SFRS’ Head of Operational Delivery and SWF Chair, Deputy Assistant Chief Officer Kenny Barbour, said: “It’s extremely important members of the public exercise extreme caution and think twice before using anything involving a naked flame during a wildfire warning.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service is calling for collective action to strengthen Scotland’s wildfire prevention and preparedness following a series of devastating incidents at home and across the world. While praising all involved for the response to recent wildfires, including the prolonged incident in the Cairngorms National Park, Scotland’s Chief Fire Officer said there is now a clear opportunity for government, public services, land managers, businesses and communities to work together to reduce future risk and improve Scotland's resilience. He believes Scotland must place greater emphasis on prevention and preparedness, warning that wildfire is an increasing and evolving threat that cannot be addressed through emergency response alone.

The wildfire in the Cairngorms has become one of the most significant and resource-intensive wildfire incidents in recent years. It began on Wednesday, 15 July, near Ryvoan Bothy and Glenmore in the Cairngorms National Park. The response has involved hundreds of firefighters, and a number of partner agencies, helicopters, landowners and volunteers have been involved. The incident response continues exactly one month on from when it first began. Below is a timeline of the major milestones throughout the incident.
