Timber & Stone
Timber & Stone gathers Scottish businesses working with the materials that give buildings their strength, character and permanence. From Highland timber and Fife hardwoods to Angus sandstone, Caithness flagstone, lime mortars and island builders’ supplies, this section reflects a Scotland made not only by architects and planners, but by sawmills, quarries, merchants, joiners and makers who understand material at the level of hand, weather and use. These are businesses shaped by geology, woodland, climate and construction culture.
The Scottish Mercat presents them as part of the country’s living material economy. Some preserve historic building methods, some supply contemporary low carbon construction, and others keep remote communities building in places where distance and weather are never minor details. Their work is practical, durable and often quietly beautiful. In timber, stone, lime and crafted structure, they help maintain Scotland’s built inheritance while supplying the materials of its future.
