Modern Scot is an independent Scottish publication focused on the practical workings of the country as it is lived, governed and made.
Its coverage centres on the systems that shape daily life: local government, infrastructure, energy, environment, transport and the economy. Particular attention is given to the activity of Scotland’s councils and public bodies, where decisions of lasting consequence are often made with limited scrutiny.
The publication was established to provide a quieter alternative to the prevailing tone of contemporary media. It does not pursue spectacle, nor does it compete on speed alone. Its approach is measured, structured and grounded in verifiable information.
Articles are written in British English and follow a consistent editorial method. Claims are attributed, gaps in information are acknowledged, and conclusions are drawn with restraint. Where necessary, statements are tested against available evidence rather than repeated unexamined.
Modern Scot is owned, edited and published by Lisa Bruce from the Scottish Highlands. She is Editor in Chief of Modern Scot, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, a member of the National Union of Journalists, and the author of The Glendarragh Code.
Modern Scot is independent and is not aligned with any political party. Its purpose is to explain Scotland as it is lived, governed and made, with a focus on clarity, evidence and public understanding.
Editorial support is provided by a small group of contributing editors, each responsible for specific areas of coverage including economy, infrastructure, local government and long-form analysis.
The publication does not align itself with any political party. It is concerned instead with how Scotland functions in practice, and how its institutions operate under real conditions.
