Aberdeen is bringing two major south-side road projects into a single planning approach as the city continues to adjust the transport network around the expanded South Harbour.
Aberdeen City Council has agreed that the Wellington Road Junction Improvement Scheme and continuing development of the Aberdeen South Harbour Link Road should now be taken forward together rather than as separate pieces of infrastructure planning.
The decision concerns one of the principal transport questions created by the development of Aberdeen South Harbour: how additional commercial, industrial and freight traffic is carried between the harbour, Wellington Road and the wider strategic road network. The council said the combined approach would take account of views already expressed by local groups and residents.
The South Harbour development has substantially increased the capacity of Aberdeen’s port estate south of the city centre, but the landside connections remain an important part of how that investment operates in practice. Wellington Road already carries local traffic alongside industrial and freight movements through the south of Aberdeen, including Torry and Altens.
The council’s decision does not itself build either road project. It brings their development together so that junction alterations and the proposed harbour connection can be considered as parts of the same transport system. The next stages will determine the eventual design, phasing, funding requirements and the relationship between the new infrastructure and existing communities.
